Wheelchair prescription training for real-world OTs and Physios

I have been a paediatric OT in the private practice space for over 15 years and in that time I have sought out both supervision and courses to increase my knowledge in the areas of complex wheelchair prescription, but to be honest never felt completely confident going into a seating review and always found myself relying heavily on the reps knowledge and experience.

Since doing this course I have refreshed my knowledge but also filled in gaps that I didn't even know was missing. I am going into the assessments and reviews with a confident plan, frameworks to justify my recommendations and the right tools, quite literally! I can't recommend this course enough! As an OT working in the NDIS space, wheelchairs and complex seating can sometimes feel daunting and overwhelming, but this course breaks everything down in a really clear, practical way. The content is incredibly comprehensive and covers the entire wheelchair prescription process, from assessment and clinical reasoning through to set-up, delivery, and troubleshooting. I am a senior OT working as a generalist. I have only been piecing information and experience via working with ATPs and clients throughout the years which works in most cases but I wanted to be better so this course gave me the confidence. Formal training wise, I have never been in a course as comprehensive as this. WOW what a course! For a quick background, I have been a community OT in complex paediatrics for a number of years and have transitioned to a role as an Assistive technology professional (ATP). As such, I have an in depth knowledge of seating assessment, clinical reasoning, trials, etc... After completing this course my knowledge base has expanded so much more. My favourite parts were definitely about pressure injuries and prevention, overview of different types of cushions, and types of supports. There is of course so much more, ranging from manual wheelchairs, power assist and power wheelchairs too! Justin does an amazing job at not just explaining what they are but how to set supports up, which is often more important than the support itself. Justin also has an amazing way of simplifying topics. See if you can find someone who can tell you the difference between immersion and envelopment....I bet you can't. Even if you have minimal experience with Assistive technology, after this course you will be able to confidently assess, prescribe and review any set-up you come up against. For those hesitant about this course. Don't be. Pull the trigger and you will see your knowledge base explode, and not only will you benefit, but so will the clients and families you are working with.

I have been an OT for about five years and have completed several wheelchair prescriptions, but I often found myself questioning whether I had chosen the right model, fit or set-up and relying quite heavily on suppliers to guide the process.

The Wheelieworx program has really helped change that. Before starting the program, I felt like I was relying quite heavily on suppliers during wheelchair trials and recommendations. I had limited experience with wheelchairs, and I often found myself second guessing whether I was asking the right questions, considering all the right options, or whether the recommendations being made were actually the best fit for my client.

The program has made a huge difference to my confidence. I now feel like I can walk into a wheelchair trial with a much clearer idea of what I am looking for, what questions I need to ask, and how to independently check and analyse the recommendations being made rather than simply relying on the supplier.

One of the biggest things I have gained is having an actual process to follow, particularly when analysing posture and working through the different wheelchair components and options. I feel much more confident knowing what to look for, how to problem solve when something isn't working, and how to make sure the final prescription is genuinely right for the person.

I still have lots to learn, but I now feel like I have the knowledge and tools to keep building my wheelchair skills rather than feeling unsure of where to start.

I am reasonably confident in scripting a wheelchair. However, I recently had a patient in a rural location requiring an all-terrain wheelchair. Not something I had scripted before. One zoom call with Justin and he was able to suggest 3 different models of chair. The pros and cons of each chair along with suppliers in the local area for the client. This was really invaluable in saving me hours looking up chairs, reading the specs and comparing them, or calling different companies etc to discuss. I highly recommend this course if you want to know the ins and outs of wheelchair prescription and education. I have done a number of wheelchair courses over the years and you can tell this was designed by an OT who lives and breathes wheelchairs. It was so practical to the real world (other courses can feel very theoretical and hard to apply). If you're on the fence about this course and don't know if you should climb back down or jump over, it's the one time I'd say jump! It has everything from questions to ask your supplier; best ways to provide education to your client for optimal outcomes; to clinical benefits that help advocate for your client in report writing.

I recently had a supervision session with Justin and found it incredibly valuable. Complex seating isn't an area I frequently work in, however I've recently taken on a number of clients in rural and remote communities who require support in this space. Exceeded my expectations. I found the course was interesting and engaging, especially learning about all the different types of equipment out there and the pros/cons of each one. Before completing the course, I had a few wheelchair clients where I felt completely out of my depth and had limited confidence in what I was doing. Seating therapists...you've stumbled upon a gem. After 15 years of working in wheelchair seating, Seating Simplified has been one of the most practical and engaging courses I've taken.

What stood out to me was the focus on what matters most - achieving positive client outcomes, alongside resources and frameworks that are easy to take back into and apply in practice. Justin is clearly passionate about this work and has a real talent for breaking down complex topics in a way that's easy to understand without oversimplifying them.

I came away with new ways of thinking about my seating practice, greater confidence in my clinical reasoning/prescriptions, and resources that will save me time. I'd recommend to any seating therapist - whether they are newer to wheelchair seating, looking to build a stronger foundation, or in a mentorship/educator or specialist role.

As a new grad, I was nowhere near prepared for wheelchair prescription. Even though I had a background as an AHA working in AT and home modifications, being the OT responsible for the assessment, clinical reasoning and prescription was a completely different level.

I knew wheelchair prescription was something I really wanted to get into, but I honestly didn't know where to start. I was losing sleep over referrals, unsure about measurements and what I should actually be prescribing. If something complex came through, I'd spend ages trying to find answers and still feel unsure. There were times I was so overwhelmed by it that I'd rather turn the referral away.

I really wanted to be able to independently prescribe a wheelchair and back myself, without feeling like I needed someone else to tell me what to do.

Now I feel so much more confident. I still don't always know exactly what I want to prescribe straight away, but now I know where to start and, more importantly, I know how to find the answer.

The course is really easy to follow but still gives you strong support across all the different parts of wheelchair prescription. Having the forms and resources already made and ready to go has been a massive help. They're accessible, easy to follow and have exactly what I need, instead of having to sit there and work everything out from scratch.

I also understand so much more about pressure care and the different options available. I'm not just thinking about the standard Jay cushion or ROHO that everyone talks about. I feel like I can actually explore different options and understand why something may or may not be appropriate for that person.

Now I can confidently start a wheelchair assessment and work through a prescription, even when it's something more complex.

I can understand what suppliers are telling me, ask questions, provide more information and request trials when I need to. When a chair is delivered, I know what I need to look for and can pick up when something hasn't been implemented properly. I can either fix it myself, explore it further with the group, or use the links and research to work out what I need to do next.

I'm also much more confident explaining what I want and backing it up with evidence-based clinical reasoning. I can talk to other allied health professionals about my plan and explain why I'm recommending something, rather than second guessing myself.

I feel much more confident talking to stakeholders and advocating for things that will actually make a difference for the person — whether that's increased community access, reducing risk of injury, education or looking at additions to the chair that might not be the standard option.

Even though I'm definitely not the biggest poster in the community, especially when I've got a big caseload and reports piling up, I still get so much out of reading what other OTs are sharing. Seeing other people's thoughts, opinions, clinical reasoning and justifications has helped me think about things differently and build my own clinical reasoning.

Overall, I've gone from being nowhere near prepared and losing sleep over wheelchair referrals, to actually feeling confident taking them on. I might not always know exactly what I want to prescribe straight away, but I know where to start, where to look and how to work it out.

And going from wanting to turn wheelchair referrals away to actually being the one getting them is the reason I can sleep at night now.

Rural OT's – You gotta do this course! I recently completed the self-paced Wheelieworx Seating Simplified course, and it was instrumental in improving my knowledge and confidence as a mid-career OT looking to dive a bit deeper into complex wheelchair prescription. I signed up as I felt like even though I had attended countless trainings, I was missing the basic foundations and principles to address the needs of more complex clients. The course is so comprehensive, and I realised pretty quickly that it was going to help my clinical reasoning across a range of clients with basic and complex needs. Justin has included step by step guides to address a variety of different presentations, and so many elements of seating and the course has given me the confidence to put together a wheelchair that I know will meet the needs of my client. In the NDIS space, and as a rural OT, this is invaluable. I don't have the time, resources, or consistent clinical support to ensure I can trial the perfect wheelchair, but I do know that by going through the steps in this course, I will have the right foundation for any recommendation I make. Before the program I felt like I was so reliant on suppliers and technicians to guide me in the right direction and now I feel comfortable going into trials and asking for what I want and also knowing whether it works or not – and if it doesn't, how to adjust it. I would highly recommend the course to anyone, regardless of their level of your level of experience, I think there is plenty to learn!

Justin's training program is exceptional. He cleverly structures content with a mix of visual and written which was very engaging (so much so that I chose to spend my weekend doing the course because I enjoyed it). The course stood out from other training because it explained wheelchair frame and cushion anatomy and what to actually do with MAT assessment findings, not just how to conduct one! Client examples made the content relatable and easier to apply in practice. Now I've finished, I am much more confident in leading the process and working collaboratively with equipment reps to guide me on product selection without depending on them for everything. For other therapists considering joining the training program, I promise its worth every penny!

A very practical, easy to apply course with a wealth or tips and resources. A great mix of video and written content that can be consumed in bite sized chunks. If you feel overwhelmed by wheelchair and seating prescription this is a great course to increase confidence and reduce overwhelm.
